Wildfires, with their profound impact on fire-prone ecosystems and critical infrastructure, stand as a significant contemporary concern. Our forthcoming webinar convenes a distinguished panel of experts to scrutinize prevailing trends in wildfire management and critical infrastructure dynamics. Dr. Monica Cardarilli from the Advanced Science for Policy Researcher at European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, alongside Dr. Miltiadis Athanasiou, Associate Researcher at the Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization DIMITRA, will elucidate strategies for enhancing cross-border risk assessment for critical infrastructures and tackling the intricate challenges posed by wildfires on infrastructures and vice versa. Dr. Emilia Gugliandolo Project Manager from Engineering Ingegneria Informatica S.p.A. will provide valuable insights into the EU-CIP project for Resilient Infrastructures. Furthermore, Esri GIS Fire experts Mike Cox, Director of Fire & EMS Solutions, and Anthony Schultz, Director of Wildland Fire Solutions at Esri, will delve into how GIS can support preparedness, mitigation, and response to wildfires, fire-prone landscapes (firescapes), and understanding critical infrastructure dynamics.

The Webinar will conclude with a panel discussion among the speakers and the opportunity for questions from the attendants. Moderated by Mr. Alexander Maranghides from the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) US Department of Commerce, along with Assistant Professor Dionysios Kolaitis from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), this webinar pledges an exploration of the critical juncture between wildfires, infrastructure, and resilience strategies. Join us for an enlightening voyage through the contemporary trends and anticipated challenges in this pivotal realm of study.

EXPLORE THE PRESENTATIONS’ CONCEPTS:

  1. Emilia Gugliandolo: Overview of the EU-CIP project for Resilient Infrastructures.
  2. Miltiadis Athanasiou: Wildfires and infrastructures: Understanding the challenges, managing the risk.
  3. Mike Cox & Anthony Schultz: Navigating Wildfire Resilience: Trends, Firescapes, and Critical Infrastructure Dynamics.
  4. Monica Cardarilli: Enhancing Cross-Border Risk Assessment for Critical Infrastructure.

Insights into the EU-CIP project, which focuses on establishing a unique pan-European knowledge network for Resilient Infrastructures and enhancing Europe’s analytical capability regarding research outcomes, technologies, and policies. It aims to build resilient infrastructures to withstand the impacts of wildfires and other disasters through advanced engineering technologies and solutions. By fostering data-driven, evidence-based policy making and innovation, the EU-CIP project supports the development and commercialization of research outcomes. Emilia Gugliandolo. Engineering Ingegneria Informatica S.p.A., Italy.

Understanding how critical infrastructure, such as power grids, transportation networks, communication systems, etc., can be affected by wildfires and vice versa, leading to potential disruptions in essential services and economic activities. Miltiadis Athanasiou Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization DIMITRA, Greece.

Highlight the role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in supporting preparedness, mitigation, and response efforts to wildfires. It will be emphasized the use of GIS for understanding firescapes, critical infrastructure dynamics, and improving overall wildfire management strategies. Mike Cox Fire & EMS Solutions at Esri (US) and Anthony Schultz, Wildland Fire Solutions at Esri, USA.

As the Directive on Critical Entities Resilience (CER) enters into force, the presentation emphasizes the importance of cross-border risk assessment to strengthen critical infrastructure resilience with a specific focus on wildfires. It addresses the complexities and challenges, including cascading effects, and provides tools and recommendations to tackle them. Monica Cardarilli, European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, Directorate E - Societal Resilience and Security, Unit E.2., Italy.
